About the ClassScene Study is a challenging, but supportive class for Manchester's Acting community. This class is specifically designed for professional actors, or those committed to pursuing performance as a career.
Our Scene Study will be kept small, with a maximum of 8 actors in each month, working solidly on one scene for the duration of the month. You will have a guaranteed hour of 'on your feet' exploration in each class, with the remaining time spent, watching your fellow actors and helping them grow. Scene Study is about passion, growth, safety and being able to make mistakes. We aim to help you push through personal barriers, and learn the intricacies of working with high-quality text, while being willing to experiment and fail, in a supportive environment. This class will push you to do your best work and surprise yourself, but you will not be bullied into it. The expectations for commitment and work ethic are high, but we will help you develop that work ethic, not expect you to have it on day one. This ethic is imperative for larger, professional productions and maintaining a sustainable and fulfilling creative life. |
The Sessions
Maximum of 8 participants in each class, to allow enough time for individual work and feedback.
- Class will involve 4 pairs of actors, each working on one scene from a different tried and tested play for 4 weeks.

- You will be expected to do outside work and be "off book" when it comes to working in class-time. The rest we will explore together.
- There is an expectation you will attend all four Scene Study classes. As each class is imperative to the next and for your scene partner. For this reason, we insist on early registration and payment.

OFFER for Returning Students
'The idea with scene study is to think of it not as a workshop but as an ongoing training technique. It's a system of training that takes getting used to and understanding the form itself so you can get the most out of it.'

Testimonials
"I would go so far as to say that Play With Fire's 'Scene Study' is absolutely necessary training for the professional actor. Dan uses his seemingly limitless knowledge and insight into practitioner theory, plays and the craft of acting to guide actors through a very personalised journey of discovery. It is a delight to have the opportunity to spend such an intense period of time studying just one scene - and in doing so finding out so much about not just your character, but yourself and your approach to character and scene development.
I have taken part in two separate scene study months with PWF already and will certainly be doing so again. It has reminded me that I am good at what I do and, most importantly, that I love it!!” - Nancy Monaghan (January Ensemble 2017/2018) |
"After watching some brilliant work from PWF over the previous months how could I not do scene study and get the chance to pick Daniels brain!? As an actress I put a great deal of trust in whomever I work with, this paid off ten times over. A space where mistakes were made, celebrated, encouraged and hilarious. The knowledge Daniel holds is inspiring and nothing short of special; quotes, techniques, exercises and each time I left I had so many new ideas to apply to my own work.
It was amazing to be able to play with this in the most safe and organic environment and have fun! And believe when I say FUN. If you do not take this class at least once you are missing out! I for one will be taking it again and again." - Alyssia Jarvis, March Ensemble, 2017 |
