Find out what our past students say about our Scene Study class & Workshops

'When I started Scene Study I had reached a real low point in my relationship to acting. I had hit the biggest brick wall and didn’t know what I was doing. From the very first session with Dan a weight was lifted and I felt myself improving. The crux of this lies in how Dan approaches his class. He takes so much care with the individual and their specific needs. He places great emphasis on the actor’s health and wellbeing and is tremendously generous when it comes to recommending reading materials and practices that have helped him overcome hurdles. In short, Dan took away a lot of the misconceptions I had about acting, which allowed me to embrace what I as a person could offer and most importantly to once again enjoy acting. I couldn’t recommend taking his class enough.' Olivia Frances, July Ensemble 2018
“The Play With Fire scene study sessions are an extremely generous and intensely rewarding four weeks. As a working actor I am always looking for fresh ways to invigorate my own process, and right from the start I felt challenged in an environment where mistakes are encouraged, risks are saluted, and talent transpires. It was fascinating to see actors from all types of background come together in such a short space of time and thrive as a result of Dan’s teachings, which were informed, purposeful and considerate. I’ve turned another corner when it comes to my own technique, and I recommend it to any actor looking to develop themselves and their own approach.” - Darren Jefferies, Hollyoaks, January Ensemble, 2017
"After watching some brilliant work from PWF over the previous months how could I not do scene study and get the chance to pick Daniels brain!? As an actress I put a great deal of trust in whomever I work with, this paid off ten times over. A space where mistakes were made, celebrated, encouraged and hilarious. The knowledge Daniel holds is inspiring and nothing short of special; quotes, techniques, exercises and each time I left I had so many new ideas to apply to my own work. A very selfish month for myself I feel, or should I say self-indulgent. How often do we get to 'play' with ones lines or have creative control completely when working on a script? In my short experience I've found little. So it was amazing to be able to play with this in the most safe and organic environment and have fun! And believe when I say FUN. If you do not take this class at least once you are missing out! I for one will be taking it again and again." - Alyssia Jarvis, March Ensemble, 2017
'I completed the May intake of Daniel’s Scene Study and found it nothing short of a masterclass in acting. The breadth of knowledge Daniel knows of acting theories, quotes and practitioners is truly inspiring. From the very first class I came out invigorated and lifted. Daniel covers all queries and qualms that an actor may have and pushes you to the limits when working on a scene. His classes also make you address what things you need to work on as a person as often these can interfere with our acting methods and beliefs, so in essence it is also a self-help class of discovery as a person too. I cannot recommend these classes enough and I have learnt so much from them and will be utilising what I have learnt for all my future work.' Elizabeth Poole, May Ensemble 2018
"Daniel was very open to what people wanted to get out of the four week scene study class and managed to tailor to everyone's individual needs with huge success. Not only was it a pleasure further develop my own acting technique without fear of judgement but to also see other people make discoveries and feel like we achieved new things sent me away each week feeling invigorated. Daniel was very patient and nurtured and encouraged us to be the best we could be. The more work we put in, the more we got out of it. Having just graduated from Drama School, the classes helped me to gain more confidence by solidifying my own technique as well as adding more tools to my box. I have been putting these to great use in my other acting work already and I now feel like I could take on any acting challenge! But most of all, it was FUN! You mustn't forget to have fun. I urge anyone who wants to push themselves or is maybe feeling like they could do a fresh perspective - TAKE THIS CLASS. You won't regret it." - James Markham, April Ensemble, 2017
"After graduating from drama school, I was looking for a class that I could join that would be of that standard & thorough in its practice, something I could really get my teeth into & be able explore a character again. Daniels plethora or knowledge with good writing/plays and human behaviour was everything I could have wished for. I felt comfortable to be able explore within the space because of the how the class was set up and felt extremely welcomed by the studios. There isn't a magic wand that makes you into a better actor but for you to take that journey & do the work & Daniel will help guide you to get the best out of your performance. I encourage any actor to give this 4 week scene study a go, it will only enhance your craft!" - Jessica Pearson, April Ensemble, 2017
'The Play with Fire 'Scene Study' class with Dan will be a class I return to again and again and again or for as long as they will have me! From the very first minute of being in the class you feel safe, safe to explore and safe to make mistakes (it's actively encouraged). You find yourself answering questions you wouldn't ordinarily, the main one being 'what went right?'.As actors, as soon as we finish a scene, most of us will declare what went wrong in that scene or what was bad about it. In Dans class, what went right or what was good about that scene is the first question you answer and I soon realised how important and healthy that is! This isn't a class for someone who doesn't like to push themselves and who doesn't like to challenge themselves, that's the joy of it, you leave every class feeling proud of that tiny little step you managed to take that made a world of difference. Before this class I had never attempted an American accent (I know, terrible!) but I wanted to get out of my same old comfort zone and Dan creates a space where you feel empowered to take risks. The old adage of you only get out of it what you put in to it is so important when it comes to this class. Meet up with your scene partner as much as you can, use the many exercises Dan will take you through, read the whole play and keep reading it. Follow these steps and more and this class will be a game changer for you, I guarantee it!' Angela Hazeldine, Sep 2018 Ensemble
"I would go so far as to say that Play With Fire's 'Scene Study' is absolutely necessary training for the professional actor. Dan uses his seemingly limitless knowledge and insight into practitioner theory, plays and the craft of acting to guide actors through a very personalised journey of discovery. It is a delight to have the opportunity to spend such an intense period of time studying just one scene - and in doing so finding out so much about not just your character, but yourself and your approach to character and scene development. I have taken part in two separate scene study months with PWF already and will certainly be doing so again. It has reminded me that I am good at what I do and, most importantly, that I love it!!” Nancy Monaghan, January Ensemble, 2017
"This workshop is the best I have attended in Manchester! Working so intensely with Dan pushes you to experiment and play around with your scene, then when you are not working directly with Dan you pick up so much from watching the others in the class. Dan is a great teacher with a wide range of knowledge on the subject of scene study, acting technique, plays & playwrights. This is not one of those acting classes where you sit there and do nothing, you will work hard and if you're willing to put in the effort you will see results. I found Dan to be very open and honest in his critique, which is something I have struggled to find in other classes with other teachers. It was refreshing to see that PWF Scene Study didn't sugar coat what the class was about. It didnt promise you your big acting break or tease you with false opportunity, it was just about working intensely on a piece to see where you as a performer could take it. Great value for money! Helpful and useable critique! Welcoming environment to work in! I will recommend the course to anyone who asks about Manchester workshops and look forward to working with PWF again!" Lauren Greenwood, September Ensemble 2018
"There's something pretty special about Scene Study. Dan creates a warm, focused & engaging environment where the actor is encouraged to think about & challenge the way they fundamentally approach their work. Its a gift to an actor to be able to spend time working and reworking a scene, time that is rarely available when rehearsing a full production. The scenes are all lifted from brilliant plays and the actors are encouraged to fully create the world of their scene - props, costume and all. Dan's knowledge & passion for his craft is obvious and infectious. He's wonderful to be around in the performance space. I took away so much from the sessions, methods that I will be taking in to future work for sure. The simplest yet most valuable lesson I learnt was how to review my work objectively - to know, after every run, how effectively I pursued my aims. I greatly encourage every actor to book on to Scene Study."
"If you are thinking about doing scene study stop thinking about it and just do it!!! Daniels knowledge and passion for scripts and techniques is incredible and very infectious. I would urge any actor experienced or not to do this course - as I can guarantee you will learnt a lot, not only about yourself but different techniques on how to approach a text that you never knew existed and all the weird and wonderful tricks and tips Daniel has in his head! As an actor out of work it's easy to feel unmotivated - scene study is just what you need to fill that gap, meet other actors and also have a huge kick up the bum to get your shit together!! A huge thank you to play with fire and to Daniel for the opportunity - I hope to be back for more scene study fun very soon!" - Francesca Heraghty-Smith, September Ensemble, 2016)
"Play with Fire’s weekly Scene Study classes have fast become one of the most essential acting classes I’ve ever taken since I started working in the industry. Daniel Bradford’s professional mentorship is insightful, encouraging, focussed and welcoming. Each week, Daniel leaves you with deliberate ideas and performance tools for an actor to ponder and explore. Being pro-active and rehearsing with your scene partner in-between classes is an essential part of reaping the benefits from future sessions, in addition to taking ownership of your progress. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working hands-on with a challenging script (and accent), collaborating closely with and learning from fellow actors, and being safely pushed by Daniel to work harder in such a tremendously supportive and creative environment. I highly recommend Play With Fire’s scene study classes and look forward to returning for future sessions." - Sean Chriscole, June Ensemble, 2016
""The Scene Study group from Play with Fire Productions is a thorough and motivating system for one to get involved in the acting area. It genuinely allows you to be yourself and find the details in the scene using a vast amount of techniques and methods plus having a careful directorial guidance and prodding from Daniel (Bradford). It is also a joy and excitement to watch fellow colleagues and learn from them too. To witness actors at their raw exploration and immersion in a scene is a luxury and a privilege, that I personally treasure. I will most definitely be embarking on another one of these scene journeys they are rather enthusing!" Catia Soeiro, June Ensemble, 2016
'I attended the July PWF intensive scene study classes with tutor Dan Bradford. It was a great experience. Dan is so committed, knowledgeable and passionate about his craft and genuinely wanted to help each of us to improve. He managed to help us unlock whatever was blocking our progress and gave precise, tailored feedback to each individual. I highly recommend this course and the fact it is limited to 8 participants is a great bonus.' Brigid Hemingway, July Ensemble 2018
"I have just completed my first Scene Study course (I say "first" because I will definitely be booking again!) and it has been a richly rewarding experience. Dan creates such a supportive and safe environment from the very first session that allows you to experiment, learn, play and grow, as both a person and a performer. And oh my GOSH, I learned so much...Dan's experience and huge wealth of knowledge and advice is so inspiring, but everything is delivered in an accessible and very human way. The work done with you and your scene partner is detailed and focussed, and absolutely tailored to your needs. Observing the other pairs work is also fascinating and inspirational. I've left the month feeling proud of what me and my scene partner acheived, but also motivated to continue learning, expanding and shaping myself as a living, breathing, working actor. It's been brilliant. DO IT!" Tom Guest, October 2018 Ensemble
"PWF's scene study class is brilliant. Often I think classes for actors can be marketed as letting you into a secret that'll guarantee you work etc etc but this class was just about the work. Spending a month just cracking on for the sake of learning - which I liked. It was challenging and none patronising, with high expectations of the actors and an equality in the rehearsal room. I think it's great value for the time you get to work and observe other people working." - Alice Proctor, August Ensemble, 2016
"Having met Hannah Ellis Ryan at ADP and seen Daniel Bradford's impressive performance in Orphans at Hope Mill Theatre, I was keen to participate in one of Play With Fire's Intensive Scene Study courses. It has turned out to be one of the best decisions that I have made since becoming a professional actress in 2011. Having trained in Drama and taught the subject for thirty years, I thought I knew most, if not all about how to tackle a text, I was wrong. Daniel's knowledge, experience and passion for the subject has highlighted just how much I still have to learn. Daniel's approach has been rigorous, illuminating and yet enjoyable. He has high expectations and has instilled in us all the need for thorough research, preparation and risk taking. I have learnt so much from participating but also from observing Daniel working with other actors. I would recommend this course to both aspiring and experienced actors. No where else will you find a four hour class for only £20. I will definitely be booking another." - Julie Root, September Ensemble, 2016
'Daniel Bradford immediately puts you at ease before diving straight in to the scene. Daniel is tremendously passionate, knowledgable and is able to give immediate accurate notes that allow you to improve week on week, if you put the work in of course! There is an expectation to meet up out of class to put the notes into practice and bring your A-game offer to the next class. It’s intense and be prepared to also discover a lot about oneself - if you’re open to it. It will definitely enhance your acting! This is more than just an acting class that I can not recommend highly enough!' Jamie Keightley, July Ensemble 2018
"Scene Study made me question everything I knew about acting. Daniel was fantastically demanding, not letting us get away with a single word that hadn't been considered and analysed. I went on to read more about and put into practice the techniques he introduced me to, and I know that I have developed as a actor. Recommend very highly." Prue Griffiths, September Ensemble, 2016
"Taking part in the scene study helped me address what I need to work on as an actor and also as a person. Dan is a non judgemental teacher who is respectful of your limits whilst pushing you to them. The class was the most intensive, illuminating and at times excruciating four weeks of my performative career. For me the class became less about acting and more about self discovery. I witnessed great changes and improvement in all members of the class from the first week to the last." - Harriette Wilson, January Ensemble, 2017
"I did Play with Fire's Scene Study with Dan Bradford earlier this year and it was a fantastic, inspiring experience. Dan worked us all so hard and I really felt the discipline and encouragement turned our performances round. It was exciting and extremely worthwhile and Dan is just an incredible teacher and his total commitment paid off in all our performances. I'm sure this is something I shall do again." - Lynda Aaron, February Ensemble, 2017
"I've taken this class twice and, as soon as I can, I will take it again, not least for the focus it gives me. Daniel is an inspirational teacher and encourages you to go beyond what you think you you can do. He expects a lot but gives much in return. Don't hesitate if you're thinking of taking this class." - Kim Harrison, April Ensemble, 2017
"If you're the kind of actor who loves to stretch themselves and explore their boundaries, this class is for you! Dan manages to create an environment where you feel comfortable to challenge yourself and try out new things, whilst having fun and meeting likeminded passionate people. By the end of the month the whole class feels like an ensemble who have grown together. It's a treat to be able to unpack a scene in this way and watch week by week as it comes to life! I will definitely be doing this class again. Can only say good things. Thanks Dan." - Luca Moore, March Ensemble, 2017
"Scene Study has helped to focus me as an actor. It is tough but a wonderful reminder about all the tiny things that we need to think about to create an amazing scene. It’s been great for discipline, line learning and focus in class. It’s a safe environment where you can ‘fail’. Through this failing, the most wonderful acting happens. It’s great watching others too, as I think we learn a lot from that. Scene Study has given me so much confidence too and I’ve landed a couple of jobs since joining the class, so thanks a million! I’d highly recommend this class to all the actors that I know and those that I don’t." - Rachael Dennis, July Ensemble, 2017
"Drama school quality acting classes with an exciting ambitious director/teacher. Its affordable but you cant afford to miss it. Excellent for actors looking to hone their skills or learn a new technique." // "I love these classes, that’s why I keep coming back. They give you a chance to hone your skills, what ever you want to work on - in a safe environment and with a teacher who cares so much for his students. Dan’s coaching is highly recommend and the method used is one that I thing should be in every actors tool kit. I couldn’t speak highly enough of it." - Nic Ancelin, Various Ensembles, 2017 - 2018
"Scene Study was a really great challenge for me and for any actor who has grown out of touch or is looking to develop their script work or confidence on scene development and making strong decisions.Personally, It made me aware of how important the line learning process is and how when your taking a job a big part of the work happens outside of the room before you begin, a welcome reminder for any busy jobbing actors who may have had your personal life etc getting in the way of your approach, Daniel is professional and great at helping address and assess your individual needs, a welcome reminder of the distinction between professional and amateur practice! THANKS DANIEL XX" - Nuala Maguire, August Ensemble, 2016
"What I really loved about Play with Fires Scene Study classes is the chance to challenge ourselves. Dan really pushes you to go as far, and do as much as you can. His energy encourages you to do just that. I loved seeing the other scenes and having a chance to read new plays. As an actor you should always be learning and I loved learning from Dan and my fellow actors new methods and ways in which to work whilst having a safe rehearsal environment to play around in - something you don't often get." - Heather Carroll, June Ensemble, 2016
"I honestly believe that Scene Study is one of only acting classes in Manchester that I've had in which as a performer, you are really encouraged to go on a personal journey. Coming from a background in devised and physical theatre, script based work was always a challenge for me. I wasn't really all that confident in how to deliver text in a way that I felt truthful and meaningful for myself as a performer, so my aim was to find that during my time at Scene Study. Now, hand on heart I can say that it was achieved. Since the class I have had an audition, I walked in so confidently and ready to perform because I saw the monologue in a completely different light. I cant believe how much I have learnt about how I can discover, create and grow my skills with text as a performer, and in just one month. So I am truly grateful for that and for the fact that I met other amazing talented performers from all walks of life too. Cheers Scene Study!" - Taylor Barnes, July Ensemble, 2016
"PWF Scene Study is an acting course like nothing else I have experienced and it far exceeded my expectations of what an acting course could be. From the very beginning Dan established a safe, nurturing and welcoming environment. A place where, regardless of experience, we could laugh together, cry together, make mistakes together and move on from them together without fear. Dan's passion and enthusiasm is infectious and makes you want to aim higher, delve deeper, think more and perform better. Wherever you are on your journey as an actor and whatever your goal the classes really offer something for everyone. To call them acting lessons is an understatement. They are a lesson in life!" Simon Mccole, October 2018 Ensemble
"My experience with Scene study taught me to look at scripts completely differently, and to push myself more than I ever have previously. I came out of it wanting to do more and to put what I had learnt into practise. It also allowed me to play with the scene and do it in different ways and work with my scene partner to find what works best! Do it! It's definitely worth it and it pushes you as an actor." - Sarah Gilby, April Ensemble, 2017
"Thank you to Daniel Bradford and Play with Fire for creating such an amazing, safe, inspiring and secure space to learn and explore as an actor!! I honestly can not recommend Scene Study to actors more highly!! I feel like I have learnt so much and looked forward to every week!!" - Amy Du Quesne, July Ensemble, 2016
“I cannot recommend Daniel’s scene study course highly enough. If you always strive to be a better, more truthful performer, who needs to be challenged and stretched, than this course is definitely for you. With Daniel making everyone feel at ease and free to explore their own comfort zones, the class grows together as an ensemble and I had complete trust in my partner (Many a tear was shed) Not only do you learn some truly mind blowing acting techniques but more importantly, for me, you learn about yourself, why you want to act, what you want out of the course, and about who you really are. I have taken so many benefits away from the course that I can definitely incorporate into my acting, but with Daniel’s knack for ‘getting’ people very quickly, have also learnt so much about myself, and that has been truly eye opening. I shall definitely be back!”
"Scene study changed my approach to acting in some fundamental ways. I am still applying the lessons learnt months later. The techniques have been simple to use outside the class within rehearsal processes. It complements well with other training I’ve done. It’s a pleasure working on a (really good - individually tailored) scene in such depth in a non-pressured environment. Dan went above and beyond to take the time to invest in us. He tailored the class to each persons stage of development. He’s a talented teacher who draws the best out of you. I can’t speak highly enough of Dan or the class and I can’t wait to go back and do it again."
I was keen to sign up for Scene Study as it was an affordable and not too lengthy acting class. Most of us can spare one day a week for a month, where a longer committment might be an issue, especially with the unpredictable nature of acting work. I was looking for an opportunity to invest in my career, and having no formal training, a chance to learn and look at what I do from a technical point of view. Having the scene chosen for you and your partner means you're not in danger of playing it safe, as well as putting each partner on a level playing field. It allows you to approach the month from your first instincts and then follow the process from a fresh perspective, as invariably the scene will be new to you. I enjoyed the experience of breaking down my approach to building a character and playing a scene and trying new ways to do the same. Watching others go through the process is as valuable, as there is always plenty to learn from others. Daniel is a passionate and committed practitioner. His dedication to teach and share skills and knowledge means you feel he is invested in your process as much as you are. - Morag Peacock, June Ensemble 2016, October Ensemble 2017
I’m very pleased to be able to say that I’ve learnt something NEW in each of the THREE Scene Study workshop placements I’ve been involved in! Play with Fire’s Daniel Bradford chooses scenes which will test your skills and your push you out of your comfort zone. At times it will be emotionally and physically demanding – that’s a result of the work you put in! For actors who are serious about their craft, I recommend it. Though every group I’ve met have been lovely and share a sense of camaraderie, the nature of the scene study is to encourage intense and believable performance, using the scene selected. Daniel explains the steps to ‘Practical Aesthetics’ with expert direction, allowing the individual actor to push themselves creatively and safely in a supporting environment. Since each individual’s journey through the Scene Study month is a personal one, the tips and techniques suggested or practised are unique to the learner, depending on the character and what real-life experiences you have. It’s also fascinating to observe the process with the other scenes. I’ve woken up sometimes with a new idea because of the work I’ve seen! Daniel dedicated the time in meaningful ways – it never feels rushed or results-driven, which is such a refreshing approach to the professional pressure we feel on a run-up to a performance. You have the opportunity to analyse, practise and discuss your character in a comprehensive way, whilst testing your skills as an actor. There’s a great selection of resources and reading materials suggested also, to put into your work what you may not have thought possible before. Daniel also makes himself available for follow-up questions and queries – it’s an intense, push-yourself-to-the-limits class and it’s certainly worth diving into! Go for it! - Graham Eaglesham, Various Ensembles 2016 - 2018
